Stanbic Chama App: How It Works, Features and Alternatives

How the Stanbic Chama App works: wallets, roles, loans and features, who it suits, and how it compares with chama management software.

The Stanbic Chama App is one of the best-known chama apps in Kenya, built by Stanbic Bank Kenya. This guide explains how the Stanbic Chama App works, what it can and cannot do, and how it compares with dedicated chama management software, so your group can decide whether it fits.

Please note: ChamaPoint is not affiliated with Stanbic Bank. The details below come from Stanbic's published app pages and FAQs, which may have changed since. Check the app and Stanbic's website for current features, charges and eligibility.

What is the Stanbic Chama App?

Stanbic describes the Chama App as an app for communities, friends and family to save together. It is available on the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store, and is open to people aged 18 and over; Stanbic's website says it is for Kenyan citizens. Stanbic's FAQ says the app is free to use, with no charges for keeping money in it.

Unlike chama software that only keeps records, the Stanbic Chama App also holds the money: each member gets a personal wallet inside the app, and the chama has its own wallet. Stanbic Bank Kenya is licensed and regulated by the Central Bank of Kenya.

How it works

  1. Register with your mobile phone number and verify your identity. A personal wallet is created for you automatically.
  2. Create a chama. The person who creates it becomes the chairperson.
  3. Invite members by phone number or from your contacts, and choose their role: member, treasurer or mentor.
  4. Fund your wallet from M-Pesa or a Stanbic account, and pay contributions from your wallet into the chama.
  5. Withdraw from your wallet to M-Pesa or a Stanbic account.

Roles in the Stanbic Chama App

RoleWhat they can do (per Stanbic)
ChairpersonCreates the chama and invites new members; has treasurer-level visibility
TreasurerSees all members' transactions, invoices members for contributions, sets up payment notifications, manages loans
MemberSees their own and other members' transactions, pays invoices, applies for loans, chats, sets goals
MentorSees the group's activity but does not contribute financially

Key features

  • Transparency: members can see balances and the transaction history of the chama.
  • Invoicing and reminders: treasurers invoice members for contributions and joining fees, and members get notified when payments are due.
  • Transaction types: joining fees, contributions, penalties, loan repayments, loan interest and disbursements are labelled separately.
  • Loans: members apply in the app, officials approve, and repayments show capital and interest separately. The interest rate is set when the chama is created.
  • Group chat and polls inside the app.
  • Goals: members and chamas can set savings goals and track progress.
  • Public chamas: a chama can be made public so others can find it and request to join, with its financial information visible.

Who it suits

Based on Stanbic's description, the app suits:

  • Groups that are comfortable keeping the chama's money in Stanbic wallets.
  • Merry-go-rounds, simple savings groups and family or event contributions.
  • Groups whose members all have smartphones and are happy to verify their identity in the app.
  • Groups that want an app at no cost.

Things to check before choosing it

  • Where your money sits. The money is held in the app's wallets rather than in a group bank account and paybill you already control. Groups that already bank elsewhere, or have a registered account with their own signatories, should consider whether they want to move money.
  • Members without smartphones. Everyone needs the app to take part fully.
  • Welfare, fines and dividends. Check how the app handles a separate welfare fund with claims, a fines register, guarantors on loans, and splitting profits by share balance at year end, if your group needs them.
  • Existing records. Check how you will bring in your current members and balances.
  • Eligibility. Stanbic says it is for Kenyan citizens; groups with members outside that group should confirm first.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Stanbic Chama App free?

Stanbic's FAQ says the app is free to download and use, and that there are no charges for keeping money in it. Check the app for any charges on withdrawals or transfers.

Do I need a Stanbic bank account to use the Chama App?

Stanbic says you can fund your wallet from M-Pesa as well as from a Stanbic account, and withdraw to either.

Can the Stanbic Chama App give loans?

Yes. Members can apply for a loan from their chama in the app if the chama offers loans, and officials approve them. The loan comes from the chama's money, not from Stanbic.

What is the best alternative to the Stanbic Chama App?

It depends on what your group needs. If you want to keep your own bank account and paybill and need detailed records for loans, welfare, fines and dividends, a chama management system like ChamaPoint is the alternative to compare.

Want to keep your own bank account?

ChamaPoint, our chama management software, keeps your chama's records while the money stays in your group's own bank account or paybill. M-Pesa payments are posted to each member automatically, with loans, guarantors, welfare claims, fines, merry-go-round and dividends in one place. Members use the ChamaPoint Android app, the web portal or USSD. Start a 7-day free trial. No card is required.
