Chama Name Ideas: 50+ Swahili and English Names for Your Group

Chama name ideas in Swahili and English, by type of group, plus tips for choosing a name that passes registration.

A good chama name is easy to say, easy to remember, and says something about what the group stands for. It will be on your registration certificate, your bank account and your M-Pesa paybill, so it is worth a little thought.

Here are chama name ideas for Kenyan groups, in English and Swahili, plus tips for choosing one that will pass registration.

Tips for choosing a chama name

  • Keep it short. Two or three words. It will be typed on forms and paybill references for years.
  • Make it unique. Registration offices may reject a name already used by another group in the area, and some ask for a name search. Have two or three backups ready.
  • Say what you stand for: unity, growth, trust, a place, or the group's purpose.
  • Avoid names that suggest a bank or SACCO, such as "bank", "finance" or "SACCO", which can cause problems at registration.
  • Agree on it together at your founding meeting and record it in the minutes.
